needsharing.org

based on RoR w/ ajax. Just opened in July. Promoted to non-profits and word of mouth currently. submit need or search for a need to solve. web based. Concept: I need help or I want to help. Ask for money, volunteers, materials.

Looking for more specific needs (things) Nonprofit organizations or people needing small items. Upgrading at end of the month with slicker interface but also with the ability to post things that are available.

Allow you to micro-donate money or connect to provide the items needed. Also allows search by location (zip or geographic using google maps mash-up)

No money made, it is a non-profit. Just a connection “people helping people”. But donations not tax-deuctible. a 503c option for contributions that is.

iPhone streaming

http://www.pixelcity.com/iphone-streaming-music/

Cool way to stream iTunes to your phone capped by your upload speed on your ISP. Gives an iPhone look to the interface. NOt searchable since it doesn’t utilize the itunes xml file. You can simply get by artist name.

Too bad I don’t have an iPhone.

Cheap MIcro-controllers (not really the name cause I walked in
late)

Something about a poor man’s theramin that I really don’t understand but is cheap and may cause me to venture into the  nearest Radio Shack for $35 in parts to make something that squeals as I wave my hands widely over it.

This one was followed up by a demo of Microsoft’s’ free robotics software and stuff. Way too much for me I escaped to the next room.

Voxeo

www.voxeo.com

Voice Xml app that makes for a web based answering service for phone. scalable and easy to use using event based setup that makes a voice network to be handled either hosted or sevrer based on premises. Looks nifty and very easy to use. Not free but inexpensive 4 to 10 cents per minute.

Ruby on Rails (not really the title, probably something like working with
clients or else, it was given by those Ruby guys though)

given by www.railsenvy.com

I have reached a bit of brain dump and am now zoning. More bout how to work with clients. It looks like great advice, defining done, and use of tools to manage client relationships. I am not paying attention though. Too many robots earlier.

Splunk

Ran away from that one. Don’t have logging concerns and it was immediately not my thing.

Flex

Late comer, have to play catch up.

As an aside, the bar is open. Beer and liquor is available. 2 beers in and no lunch for a bit of buzz that is not helping with the focus issues.

Flex Cont.

good A/C, open tag is giving him hell still don’t know what is going on.

Easy iCalendars

www.fbcal.com
www.veganbob.com

It is outlined on the website and seems easy to use (hence the title). Will play with it later.

passion + inspiration = innovation

Non tech more of a philosophical bit. Lots of stuff about figuring out what the hell you want to do. Dude, he is ordained. Now going into the history f the internet. I remember BBS (prodigy). I wonder if he is going to leave Al Gore out. Yes he is. He didn’t get the Al invented the inter-tubes memo.

Distracted by
BarCampOrlandoFlickr group ,hyku (aka Josh Hallett) has taken a lot of photos

Back to the presentation. www.asoboo.com a cool site, I don’t know why. I wasn’t paying attention. Again with the concentration thing.

Interest from the crowd is sort of there. Need for locations is the most important jumping off point. Then follows price. Talk also of EDC and government agencies that are more concerned about bringing industry here rather than developing local grow initiatives. Needs organization rather than many voices, one focused one.

Hints: name it within the 1st 5 episodes. Keeping the same name and url helps retain viewers/ listeners. Episode numbers are not essential but paying attention to locations of listeners and content popularity helps focus on what is working. Make sure to keep it personal, an extension of you not a competition to real media which you will never beat. Show notes help a lot to keep subscribes connected and personalized.

Some crazy map shit. It has massive amounts of geographical data plus other camera views that are high in detail for environmental data. Allows users to upload and sell geo data and maps. You can also find what you need and buy it from others as well.

The Thoughts from the Day After

I think that it was a great event. I wish some of the politicos that talk about bringing tech jobs to the area were there to see the people already working and how vibrant and already economically established the current community is.

It started crowded but not horrible. Many ditched quick, maybe to say they came or just didn’t see what they wanted, but the crowd that stayed was cool. Granted, a non-technical person, much was way over my head but I could catch on pretty quick to most and the presenters seemed good enough at getting the idea across that it was cool non the less. Some of the hardcore types were
disgruntled at foo-foo stuff and some were a little put out by the hardcore in depth stuff. But the mix was good. And I think both needs to be there. A little for all, community thing.

I think Greg did a great job organizing it and it seemed to run really smooth for a first time event. I am not going to quibble about what might need tweaking, that is for next year. It was good enough for me to want to come next year and while I mooched this time I hope to have something to present then.

As for my faves presentations:

Needsharing.Org - cool concept and interesting take on the social community thing for the nonprofit edge

Podcasting - very bare and basic concepts on how to get it going and learned advice from someone doing for sometime now. Best tip was the stick with name thing. Too many go down that road of rebranding (this applies to anything web) and lose following because.

Startup in Orlando - enormously practical advice on working through the ideas and finding the right places to help you see it through. From finding the right person to spend way too much time with to trying over and over to get in the door for help and funding.

Cheap Microcontrollers and Easy iCalendars round out the stuff I will be able to take away from. Annoying devices are nifty and sharing way too much info is cool. If I get these working I will be sure to share.

Nonetheless, be sure to check out the sponsors and other that participated to support their efforts. Already hearing rumblings of another BarCampOrlando and I agree with Ryan Price on the call for a PodCamp.

Hope to see you at BlogOrlando.
