The plans for the new playground at the neighborhood center on Ferncreek has been underway for nearly a year. A variety of delays and odd planning issues have put it off but it there is news. According to Beth Gruber, the landescape architect designing the new park, the contract has been awarded to Cathcart Contracting, Inc. There are some trees to be removed to make way for the new equipment but also to make the area safe since they are some of the same that collapsed with the hurricanes several years ago. There will be several new trees to make up for the loss and then some. The plans are below and since Beth also worked on the Lake Eola redesign there should be some good kid niftiness.
Construction should begin in late October. The City will likely remove the trees in September to early October.
The big new news is the addition of the community garden by Leu Gardens. An opportunity for residents to grow their own food and flowers with the help of arguably the best green thumbs in O-Town. Right now the area nearest and adjacent to Spokane is considered for this new addition. It would replace the horseshoe pit and one tree.
More details and those involved for questions at the next Colonialtown Neighborhood Association meeting this Thursday night at 7 pm in the Colonialtown Neighborhood Center. Plans and info below.
